Tooth Extractions

A tooth extraction is a procedure to remove a tooth, that has decayed after food and bacteria interact to form plaque and tartar. While a tooth may require extraction for a variety of reasons, removal is usually the method of last resort. If a cavity is left untreated your tooth decays and then there may not be enough tooth structure to support a filling. In some cases a tooth may need to be removed to prevent further infection. If a tooth is weak and cracks and breaks it may require removal. Facial Injuries may damage teeth which may then require extraction. Periodontal (gum) disease generally leads to loss of bone, which is the support structure of teeth. This may lead to teeth becoming loose and requiring removal. The most common tooth extraction performed at Mid Manhattan Oral Surgery is impacted wisdom teeth removal.

Oral Examination

With an oral examination and panoramic X-rays of the mouth, Dr. Calat can evaluate the position of the teeth and predict if there are present or may be future problems. Studies have shown that early evaluation and treatment result in a superior outcome for the patient.

All outpatient surgery is performed under appropriate anesthesia to maximize patient comfort. Dr. Calat has the training, experience and certifications to provide various types of anesthesia for patients to select the best alternative.

Tooth Removal

This oral surgery procedure can be performed in our Manhattan or Hoboken office under local, intravenous or general anesthesia. Afterwards you should rest and take any medications as prescribed. In select cases, dental implants can be placed at the same time of an extraction – further minimizing the number of surgical procedures. This is known as an immediate implant. These options, will be discussed with you at your visit when you meet Dr. Calat. Once a tooth is removed, the gums may need to be sutured. If necessary our office uses self-dissolving sutures (stitches). To help control bleeding, gauze is placed in your mouth. After an extraction you will rest under our supervision in the office until you are ready to go home. Upon discharge, your postoperative kit will include postoperative instructions, a prescription for pain medication, antibiotics, and a follow-up appointment.

Our services are provided in an environment of optimum safety that utilizes modern monitoring equipment and staff who are experienced in anesthesia techniques.
