All patients should have their wisdom teeth evaluated during their mid or late teen years. We will do a full oral exam and take a specialized panoramic or 3D X-ray, to learn the position of the wisdom teeth and if there are any problems. Early evaluation and treatment of difficult wisdom teeth can dramatically improve treatment outcomes and future oral health as well as significantly decrease any possible complications.

The last of three sets of molars, wisdom teeth are the most likely teeth to have problems, and the least needed teeth in the mouth. They are prone to partial or full impaction, as well as to positioning issues that could cause problems with the other teeth.

Problematic wisdom teeth are normally extracted. Your mouth will be thoroughly numbed, and then a small incision made to open the gum tissue. If necessary, we will remove any bone that is covering the tooth. We will then grasp the tooth with dental forceps and pull it out as gently as possible. Some wisdom teeth need to be cut into smaller pieces, and stitches may be required.

If the wisdom teeth are straight and uncrowded, and they fully emerge from the gums, then they may not need to be removed. However, serious complications can arise from wisdom teeth that are impacted, sideways, or crowding the surrounding teeth. Cysts, tumors, shifting teeth, and infection are among the most common issues. It is always best to remove troublesome wisdom teeth before any complications occur, making a thorough evaluation vital.

An impacted wisdom tooth is painful and can damage your other teeth, but it is not lethal. What can be fatal is a wisdom tooth infection. Impacted wisdom teeth are particularly at risk for infection because food and bacteria become trapped between the gum tissue and tooth, creating an environment where infection easily forms. If this infection is untreated, it can travel to other parts of the body or enter your bloodstream. As with any infection that spreads throughout the body, this has the potential to be fatal.

You’ll be able to choose between local anesthesia only or local anesthesia with IV sedation. IV sedation allows you to sleep through your procedure. While, technically speaking, you are still conscious and breathing on your own, you will have no awareness or memory of your wisdom tooth extraction. If your wisdom teeth are impacted, even with local anesthesia the procedure can be uncomfortable due to the sounds and feelings of pressure and pulling, so if you are prone to anxiety or feel nervous about medical or dental procedures, you may wish to be sedated.

It can take a week or two to recover from an extraction of impacted wisdom teeth, depending on your age and the level of impaction, but it can take a few months for your gums and jaw to completely heal. Most of our patients are able to return to work, school and daily activities the day after the procedure.

Many people fear wisdom tooth extraction, but this common procedure is actually pretty simple in the hands of a specialist. We will make sure that your mouth is completely numb, and use the latest techniques and technology to reduce discomfort and provide you a pleasant experience. You will be given prescription pain medication.Taking the medication as directed will help you have a smooth and comfortable recovery. You will also receive detailed instructions for caring for your mouth, including directions regarding eating, drinking and not smoking. Most people feel significantly better in 24 to 48 hours, and can resume normal activities within three days.

You will have the option to have your procedure performed with local anesthesia, where we thoroughly numb the area.  Or you may choose to have your procedure performed with IV sedation anesthesia and local anesthesia. The primary difference, is that with IV sedation you are safely asleep for the local anesthesia injections and the procedure.
